Rijeka

Rijeka is a city situated in the Adriatic Sea gulf called Kvarner and is referred to as the most important Croatian seaport. If you thought that industry did not go well with tourism, you were wrong. Rijeka combines both and represents a popular tourist destination. Together with its surroundings it has around 250,000 inhabitants, the city itself has approximately 150,000 inhabitants and is Croatia’s third largest city. Along with tourism, it benefits from shipbuilding and represents Croatia’s biggest shipyard.

Just like other parts of Croatia, Rijeka has changed numerous reigns. It has struggled through the eras of gothic, baroque, trying to keep its Croatian soul no matter who ruled over it. Fear of losing the freedom once again finally came to an end in 1947 when Rijeka was returned to Croatia. Ever since then, Rijeka seems to be improving its tourist notability and its industry, becoming one of Croatia’s most notable cities.

Due to its favorable position on the Adriatic, it is a hot spot — a hot spot of tourism, Mediterranean climate, rich historical heritage, nice people and more. The well indented coast is a trademark of Croatia so it applies to Rijeka as well. A number of bays are suitable for a variety of activities that can suit everyone’s taste.

As we mentioned, Rijeka attempts to improve the level of tourism, and hence has a lot of things to offer. Museums of all kinds — historical, art, maritime; as well as libraries, galleries, monuments. Old Gateway — Roman Arch — represents a priceless piece of art, an entrance to the old military command called Praetorium. Historical and cultural sites tell stories of an interesting past and are a must to see.

The Croatian National Theater Ivan pl. Zajc is another proof of a rich cultural heritage and the highest point of art. Rijeka’s famous part is its promenade called Korzo — intersection of different cultures and generations. There is also a sanctuary of Madonna Trsatian located 135 meters (148 yards) above the sea level.

Rijeka is a big sports and recreation center — sailing regattas, swimming and fishing competitions, hiking, football, handball, basketball, water polo and many others.
