The National park Kornati is situated in Central Dalmatia, between the cities of Šibenik and Zadar. It represents an archipelago of about 150 differently sized islands, reefs and islets covering the surface of around 200 km2 (77 mile2). 89 of 150 islands were declared a national park back in 1980 due to their notable beauty and structure. The biggest island, known as Kornat, covers most of the park — two thirds of it.

The Kornati islands are mostly uninhabited — simple cottages belong to the people of the island Murter and are offered to tourists.

It is a great way to see all the beauty of nature — deep blue sea all around you, no electricity, no devices, just you and nature. If you are a nature lover, going to Kornati for a few days can really help you bond with nature.

Along with the structure, Kornati is known for the cliffs. The highest ones are on the islands of Klobučar, Mana and Rašip Veli. Even though they are mostly uninhabited, there are archaeological landmarks dating from ancient history. Meaning that some time in the past, there were people living on these scattered islands.

Kornati seems to be famous for the walls. Well, precisely, kilometers of walls built by the pasture owners for only one purpose — to hinder sheep from trespassing.

The Islands are home to different animals. The most commonly known ones are martens, eagles, hawks, rabbits, terns, seagulls and a variety of fish species. When it comes to fauna, the most common species is sage.

Due to its ornithological and floristical beauty, island Piskera is strictly preserved, but sailors, adventurers or simply tourists, can find places to rest and enjoy traditional sea food specialties.

There are different things to see and do when coming to Kornati. You can not afford to miss them. Let’s start with cliffs or kruna, as people of Murter call them, or “corona”, in Italian. There is a myth that national park Kornati owes its name to that Italian word.

You can walk and walk and observe the wild life of Kornati, you can dive and discover the beauty of underwater.

You can experience the spirit of history by exploring ancient remains — Tureta Fortress dating from the 6th century, Christian basilica, church of Lady of Tarca, remains of the salt pans in the bay of Lavsa and many more.

Whatever you do, whatever you see, you will bring home a nice image of Kornati.
