Split

Split represents the second largest city in Croatia. It’s situated by the sea, in Dalmatia, the southern part of Croatia. It represents an educational, economic, tourist and sports center. It has a 1700 year history which has helped Split become what it is today — a friendly and cozy destination with constantly smiling and graceful people. As we are talking about people, we might mention that Split has approximately 200,000 inhabitants. Since it is situated by the sea, Split is a sunlit city — winters are warm, summers are too hot. Split is situated at the bottom of the hill called Marjan which looks like its shield.

Its history goes back to the end of the third century when the Roman Emperor named Diocletian, requested a palace to be built for his majesty, where he could enjoy his last years. The palace of 38,000 m2 (45,447 yard2) today represents the old part of Split, we can positively say its heart, its core. Diocletian’s palace holds a lot of cultural notabilities, making it a very attractive location. Entering the Diocletian’s palace, you automatically feel the coldness of the stones, you can imagine Roman soldiers marching through… It seems that Split never sleeps — it is always active, always full of life. With its special atmosphere, perky and gregarious people, it knows how to attract tourists. The most popular promenade is what we call Riva, a paved surface along the coastline, with palm trees and rays of sun always pointing Riva’s way.

Split is overloaded with archaeological sites, old sculptures, statues, churches, theaters… Every single one of them tells a specific story. It is impossible to say that this city does not have a soul. Prokurative, Voćni trg, Peristil, Sustipan, statue of Grgur Ninski, statue of Marko Marulić, they all together constitute the soul of Split, they all make history interesting.

As we said, this city is never asleep — during the summer days you can enjoy cultural activities such as Splitsko ljeto and Splitski Festival. During the winters, a variety of activities occur and everyone can find something suitable for themselves — from the movies, museums, exhibitions to the coffee shops.

Split it always referred to as a sports city. And if you ask someone who was born there what they are proud of, they will start naming things taking only one breath. They will proudly say — Diocletian’s palace, Marjan, Cathedral of Saint Dujam and Hajduk. Hajduk is the local football team and natural love of so many people coming not only from Split but also other places. Their love for Hajduk is something incomparable. Along with Hajduk, the basketball club Split, the Rowing club Gusar and many many individuals such as Goran Ivanišević, Mario Ančić, Toni Kukoč, Dino Rađa spread the name of Split and its soul all around the world.

Beautiful beaches are another advantage of this city. Pebbly or sandy beaches, different types for everyone’s taste. As we mentioned before, Split is always full of life and when you visit it, remember our words… Saint Dujam, the patron saint of Split, will watch over you.
